Snip & Tip Instructions

Trap/Neuter/Return Clinic Instructions

Day of Clinic:  Cats should be checked into the clinic between 8 and 9 am.

All cats must arrive in live traps.

 TRAPS:

Cats must be brought in commercial humane traps, one cat per trap.  No cat carriers, cages or homemade traps.  We loan out traps with a fully refundable $50 deposit per trap.

You can purchase your own traps locally (Co Op or TSC) or from Tomahawk by calling 1-800-272-8727 or www.livetrap.com.   If you bring your own trap please identify it with your name.

CATS:

Cats should have no food or water after 8:00 PM the night before surgery.  If a cat may have eaten the morning of surgery, you must let us know since complications could be fatal.

The left ear of each cat will be cropped as a permanent mark to indicate an altered, vaccinated feral cat.  To see a picture of a cat with an ear tip click here.

Cats must be at least 4 months old.  If you are not sure, bring the cat so our vets can tell if it is old enough.  Females that have recently had kittens should not be brought in if the kittens are nursing and are too young to be on their own for any length of time.  If the kittens are already eating solid or canned food, they should be fine on their own for a day or two.  Be sure to provide them with food during the time that you’ve got Mom in her trap.

After surgery, male cats should be kept in their traps at least 24 hours and females can be released Monday night or Tuesday morning.  Cats should be released where they were trapped.  You will receive detailed discharge instructions when you drop off the cats.

If you trap no cats and do not show for a registered clinic, you must call back to get signed up again.

If you trap fewer cats than you registered for, bring what you’ve got.  If two cats inadvertently get caught in one trap, bring an empty trap with you to the clinic.  The cats will be separated after they are sedated.  Please read trapping instructions.

Reminders:

* Keep each trap covered with a sheet to reduce the stress of the cats
* Do not put food can or dish in trap because the cat can become injured by it
* Do not leave traps unattended overnight.

Cats must be transported in a temperature-controlled vehicle since they cannot regulate their body temperature until fully awake from anesthesia.  Do not transport in the open bed of a truck.

Alley Cat allies has a great resource guide regarding feral cats at www.alleycat.org

This program is deveoted to helping stray and feral cats that would not be sterilized if not for SNIP & TIP.  This program will not sterilize owned pets or strays being adopted by the finder.  All cats will receive a left ear tip to identify them as spayed or neutered and vaccinated cat.

Although a donation is not necessary to use our service, it is appreciated.  We depend on tax-deductible contributions to be able to continue offering this service.  All work is done by volunteers.  New Leash on Life is a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to humanely reduce homeless cat population through a no-charge trap-neuter-return program.
