It is a time of Thanksgiving. A time where family and friends join together to share a meal, reflect and give thanks. I know this year I have a bountiful list of things of which I am grateful.
As we
move forward in our efforts to address the animal welfare needs of our
community through shelter and placement, spaying and neutering
services, education and awareness raising, there will go not one day
without a homeless animal needing protection.
There are days that the
battle to end the suffering of our dogs and cats seems futile. But,
greater than the sentiment of futility is the blessing of people who
care. Our community is rich with people who care and take action.
Some of us know that Josh with Animal Control made sure that the 14
dogs recently seized in an abuse case took the time to defend, in court
their plight. That our own Natalie Corwin has fought many hours to
push laws that better protect the defenseless. That Laurie Rathbun
takes under her wing every day those that cross our threshold.
Few
know the stories of the army of people who volunteer their time to help
animals find their forever home, make certain that there are liners for
every kennel where the animals stay overnight at Fix for Life or of Jon
Vaden who has diligently watched over the colony of feral cats and
reached the goal of no new kittens this year.
I am grateful for each
and every person who cares and takes action to look out for these
beautiful animals. It takes Lee Holmes sitting as council on our board
of directors, and Pam Denny who has managed our accounts, and each and
every one of us to pull together and make the difference. We each
serve our own role and purpose in this fight, and every effort and
action is necessary.
Each
day, as I walk with my two dogs, I take a moment to give thanks. This
month, our month of thanksgiving, I will wish you all the gratitude
that each have earned. I am realistic about the work that needs to be
done and deeply moved by all that work so hard.
